Inspiring Motivation

As a Personal Trainer, I see clients every week, and encounter their struggle with the motivation to get and stay fit.  If I didn’t struggle with it so frequently myself, I’d think that they were all just a bunch of pansies!  But I do, we all do.....why??

This is what I’ve concluded: First of all, we make excuses!  We give ourselves an “out” with every excuse in the book....”My throat is sore, I’m super tired this week, I deserve a treat because I had such a hard day, I’m way too busy, I have no support, no one will work out with me.....” The list goes on and on.  Then we allow those excuses to extend from one day into the whole week, and now we’ve given ourselves permission to sabotage our fitness goals because we feel justified in our excuse!  And your excuse very well might be justified.....but it is NOT helping you reach your fitness goals and keeping you healthy.

So how do we counter that?  I think so much of motivation comes from within your own head.  What do you say to yourself, about yourself?  I know what I say way more times than I can count.....”I can’t.....I can’t.....I want to.....but I can’t... it’s too hard, I can’t”!  Of course it’s hard! Who said it would be a piece of cake??  Hahahaha......sigh! It’s difficult, but completely possible if you really, really want it!

Secondly, we need to write down our goals in measurable and attainable sections!  If my goal is to lose 5 pounds by the end of the week, then my “to-do” list looks like this:

  1. Put my workout clothes beside my bed the night before, so I can jump right into them in the morning! (do this every night)
  2. Get a new alarm that doesn’t startle me awake and start my day off feeling annoyed. (complete by tomorrow)
  3. Sign up for 2 spin classes a week! (do this when I go to the gym tomorrow)
  4. Buy a great water bottle and fill it at least 6x today! (starting now)
  5. Arrange babysitting for the entire week so I can make it to the gym when I say I’m going to go! (phone by the end of the day)

There you go.....THINK POSITIVELY and MAKE A PLAN.....now THAT inspires motivation!!
